How long is the program, and how is it delivered?

The Diagnostic Medical Sonography program runs 76 weeks, or about 24 months. It uses a hybrid format that combines online theory coursework with on-campus scanning labs and an external clinical externship, giving you academic flexibility along with extensive hands-on scanning time.

What will I learn, and what does the program prepare me for?

You will train to become a competent, entry-level general sonographer. Coursework covers ultrasound physics and instrumentation, cross-sectional anatomy, and the pathophysiology of the abdomen, pelvis, and superficial structures, along with obstetric and gynecologic imaging. Graduates are prepared to operate ultrasound equipment, recognize normal and abnormal findings, and support the interpreting physician.

What does the clinical externship involve?

In the final phase you complete Clinical Externship I and II, totaling more than 1,000 hours at an approved clinical affiliate site. During these rotations you build the required clinical competencies, verified through preceptor check-offs, and apply your classroom and lab training in a real imaging environment.

How much does the program cost?

The total estimated program cost is $33,875. That includes a $100 registration fee, $32,500 in tuition, a $1,200 technology and lab fee, and a $75 background check and drug screen paid to a third-party vendor. Unlimited scheduled lab access and two sets of embroidered scrubs are included in tuition and fees.

What are the graduation requirements?

To graduate you must complete all required courses with a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA, earning a C or better in every core DMS course, pass all mandatory clinical competencies with preceptor sign-off, maintain at least 85% attendance across classroom and lab hours plus 100% of your externship hours, and clear any remaining balance with the Bursar office.

Is the program accredited, and can I sit for the registry exam?

Union Centre Institute is licensed by the Ohio State Board of Career Colleges and Schools. The Diagnostic Medical Sonography track is an upcoming program currently seeking final approval, and the Institute is actively pursuing approval from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). The program is designed to meet the educational requirements to sit for national registry examinations. The Institute does not guarantee board passing scores or employment outcomes.
